Luminate works to ensure all older people in Scotland can enjoy high quality arts and creative activities, whatever their circumstances.
As it approached its tenth year, Luminate had transitioned from being an annual festival, to an organisation that has a wider strategic role in developing the arts for older people across Scotland, with a particular focus on longer-term year-round projects.
We updated Luminate’s brand to build on their reputation and stature. We took their existing logo and streamlined it to ensure high legibility and consistent use across printed and on-screen materials.
The shift in Luminate’s focus also required a flexible and accessible website that would support both Luminate and their audiences through this period of change, and beyond.
For key typography, we selected a typeface designed specifically for users with impaired vision – Atkinson Hyperlegible, by the Braille Institute. As well as being highly legible – with lots of thoughtful touches that enhance legibility for low-vision users – it is modern, friendly and approachable. This made it an ideal choice for Luminate.
Working with Luminate’s team, we developed a flexible colour palette that is dynamic and bold, but also grown-up and mature. The colours were selected for high contrast when used with overlaid type, to cater for an aging audience, many of whom have deteriorating or low vision.
The website emphasises clarity and simplicity – both in its visual design, and its navigational structure.
The visual design emphasises high contrast colours and a clear hierarchy of information, to aid users living with low vision and dementia. Visual distractions are kept to a minimum, and layouts are kept simple, in order to benefit all users.
Based on a WordPress CMS, the website is entirely custom-designed, with a customised administration area enabling Luminate’s team to quickly and easily add new content, events and news, along with multimedia content and images.
